Disinformation is a powerful tool in modern warfare. Russia has been using it to shape opinions and control narratives in its war against Ukraine.

Recently, the Ministry of National Defense in Romania exposed and refuted false claims made by Russian state media about alleged Romanian involvement in the conflict, according to Ziare.

The Russian media claimed that drone attacks carried out by their own forces on Ukrainian port infrastructure near Romania’s border targeted a supposed operation involving Romanian soldiers.

According to these false reports, Romanian troops were allegedly being transported by boat to assist Ukraine.

The reports also claimed that Romanian Air Force helicopters evacuated wounded soldiers after the attack.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defense firmly denied these allegations. Officials explained that, during the drone attacks on the night of January 16 to 17, Romanian airspace was violated.

In response, two F-16 fighter jets were deployed from the 86th Air Base in Borcea. Later investigations revealed fragments of Russian-made drones in two areas near the border, but no damage or casualties were reported.

In their statement, the ministry criticized the Russian disinformation campaign. They called it an attempt to spread fabricated stories and manipulate public opinion.

The ministry explained that such false claims are part of a broader propaganda strategy. These narratives aim to convince the public that NATO, including Romania, is actively seeking to enter the war.

The false reports also target the Russian domestic audience. They are designed to support the myth that Russia is under attack by NATO.

The idea of a “besieged fortress” is used to justify Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine.

Romanian officials reminded the public that Russia has militarized the Black Sea, invaded Ukraine, and violated international laws for years.

Since 2022, Russia has waged an illegal war against its neighbor, while also conducting hybrid operations against NATO and EU member states.

The Ministry of National Defense urged vigilance against disinformation.

They expect similar fake news to continue circulating, especially online, where propaganda is amplified by digital algorithms and coordinated networks.
