Submarines have long been a vital asset in naval warfare, offering stealth, versatility, and the ability to strike from beneath the waves.
From patrolling contested waters to launching precision strikes, their significance in modern military strategy cannot be overstated.
Nations around the globe continue to invest in advanced submarine technology, recognizing their role as both a deterrent and a force multiplier in times of conflict.
Exceptionally Silent
Russia has recently bolstered its naval capabilities with the induction of the Archangelsk, a state-of-the-art nuclear-powered submarine, into its Northern Fleet.
The Archangelsk, part of the Yasen-M class, represents a significant advancement in Russia’s underwater warfare technology, according to WP.
These multipurpose submarines are designed for stealth and versatility, capable of engaging both sea and land targets with precision weaponry.
The Archangelsk is equipped with cutting-edge systems, including the OK-650KPM nuclear reactor, enabling it to operate at high speeds and extreme depths.
Measuring over 130 meters in length and with a displacement of 13,800 tons, the vessel can reach speeds of up to 35 knots while submerged.
Its advanced noise-reduction technology has even drawn recognition from Western military analysts for its exceptional quietness, making it a formidable adversary in underwater operations.
Armed with a range of weapons, the submarine features eight vertical missile launchers capable of carrying up to 32 Kalibr or P-800 Oniks cruise missiles.
These missiles, used in conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, highlight the vessel’s potential for long-range precision strikes.
The Archangelsk is also expected to be compatible with Russia's hypersonic Zircon missiles, although it remains unclear if these were tested during the submarine’s trials.
The submarine’s deployment in the Northern Fleet’s Zapadnaya Litsa base, close to NATO territory, has raised concerns among Western nations.
Located on the Kola Peninsula near Norway, this base underscores the strategic positioning of Russia’s advanced naval assets.
