The Russian military recently released footage claiming to show the destruction of a Ukrainian Patriot missile defense system.

However, it appears that the footage actually depicts the destruction of a decoy, according to military analysts and Tech.

Hit on A Decoy

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has seen significant reliance on Western weaponry, including the high-cost Patriot missile systems, crucial for Ukraine's defense. To protect these valuable assets, Ukrainian forces have employed a tactic of using realistic replicas to mislead and divert enemy attacks.

The Russian video in question showcases what is purported to be a strike by a Korean KN-23 ballistic missile, akin to the Russian Iskander-M, on a Ukrainian Patriot system.

Jarosław Wolski, a military analyst, notes that the footage actually reveals a hit on a decoy system. He points to the poor placement of the system’s components and the absence of secondary explosions as evidence of this deception.

100 Targets Simultaneously

Despite these tactical measures, not all attempts to protect Patriot systems have been successful.

Another analyst, Dawid Kamizela, highlighted a recent video that appears to show a genuine Russian attack on a Patriot system's fire control elements in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Fortunately, this attack did not result in the destruction of the launchers.

The Patriot system, developed by Raytheon, has become a critical component of Ukraine’s air defense strategy.

With its advanced radar capabilities and ability to track up to 100 targets simultaneously, it plays a key role in protecting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure from aerial threats. Its mobility and adaptability make it a high-priority target for Russian forces.
