Russian military sources and Telegram channels have circulated a video purporting to show the use of a thermobaric bomb, specifically the ODAB-9000, on the city of Vovchansk.

Most Powerful Non-Nuclear Weapon

This claim, reported by Russian media outlet Lenta.ru, has drawn scrutiny from Ukrainian sources, which argue that such powerful weapons have rarely been deployed, according to L'Independent.

The ODAB-9000 is recognized as one of the most powerful non-nuclear weapons globally, with an explosive capacity equivalent to approximately 44,000 kilograms (97,000 pounds) of TNT.

Its design utilizes atmospheric oxygen to create a massive explosion and shockwave, leading to widespread destruction over large areas. Ukrainian defense analysts have suggested that the footage might depict a less powerful variant, the ODAB-1500, possibly used following a failed Russian offensive in Vovchansk.

Used Only Once

According to reports from RBC Ukraine, the ODAB-9000 is largely experimental and has reportedly been used only once during a test in 2007.

This raises significant questions about the credibility of claims regarding its recent deployment.

Furthermore, experts, including those from the Kyiv Post, point out that using such a bomb necessitates a direct drop from a bomber, which would expose the aircraft to potential anti-aircraft missile fire from Ukrainian defenses.

The ongoing conflict has led to a war of narratives between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides presenting conflicting accounts. As the situation unfolds, the veracity of the claims regarding the use of the ODAB-9000 remains uncertain, with many experts urging caution in interpreting these reports.
