The US routinely conducts flights over international waters, asserting that these operations are carried out in neutral airspace and in accordance with international law. However, Moscow's recent responses have become increasingly aggressive, according to L'Independent.

In June, Russia warned that American drone flights over the Black Sea could potentially lead to a "direct military confrontation."

Intercepting US Bombers

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian fighter jets were scrambled to intercept an "aerial target" approaching Russian airspace.

The target was identified as two US Air Force B-52H strategic bombers. As the Russian fighters neared, the American bombers adjusted their flight path, veering away from the Russian border and avoiding a potential international incident.

Heightened Tensions

The interception is the latest in a series of confrontations that highlight the fragile state of US-Russia relations. In June, Russia accused the US of using reconnaissance drone flights over neutral waters of the Black Sea to assist Ukraine in targeting Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

Moscow claimed these flights increased the risk of a "direct confrontation" between NATO and Russia, prompting its military to prepare for an "operational response."
