In the northern sector, soldiers from the Hetman Ivan Mazepa Brigade successfully repelled a Russian assault with the assistance of drones.
According to the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade, during the attack, two Russian assault groups, each consisting of five soldiers, advanced into Ukrainian trenches.
“The enemy’s goal was to capture the dugout,” the military stated, as reported by Militarnyi.
However, Ukrainian infantry forces managed to halt the advancing troops before drones were deployed to the scene.
Drone operators from the K-2 Battalion effectively “tore to shreds” the enemy forces. Most of the Russian soldiers were killed on Ukrainian positions, with only one managing to escape.
“The invaders tried their best to gain a foothold there, sending as many of their soldiers as possible. But the UAV operators, including heavy strike drones, who worked at an atypical time of day, did their job,” the military said.
The enemy's attack in this area was primarily conducted with infantry, although there were also attempts to breach Ukrainian defenses using motorcycles.
“In the Siversk sector, as in other areas, the enemy tries to carry out assault actions daily. Most of these assaults involve enemy infantry,” the military explained.
54th Mechanized Brigade
The 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade was formed in 2014 in Bakhmut, located in the Donetsk region. It became a key reinforcement for the Ukrainian army during the anti-terrorist operations.
In 2018, the K-2 Mechanized Battalion joined the brigade and quickly gained a reputation for excellence in the war, becoming a legendary unit. K-2 has its own distinctive armband, featuring a bat on a camouflage background, symbolizing its origins as a reconnaissance group.
The 54th Brigade was stationed near Mariinka in the Donetsk region at the onset of the large-scale invasion. As a result, the soldiers of the brigade are often regarded as the first and most resilient defenders of the city. Due to the ongoing conflict in the area up until February 2022, the soldiers were already on alert when the full-scale invasion began.
Recently, the brigade's drone operators received the Shark aerial reconnaissance system to enhance their capabilities.
