Russian forces continue to use illegally obtained Starlink satellite communication terminals on the battlefield, despite U.S. efforts to prevent the technology from reaching them, according to The Washington Post.
These terminals enhance Russia’s combat coordination and maneuverability, allowing for better communication during assaults, more frequent drone use, and improved precision in artillery strikes.
Starlink, developed by SpaceX, is prohibited from being supplied to Russia due to sanctions.
However, Ukrainian military personnel report a growing black market for the terminals, which have played a significant role in recent Russian offensive successes.
Six Ukrainian soldiers in Donetsk told The Washington Post that Russia’s access to Starlink has closed the technological gap, making its forces more coordinated and effective in attacks.
The Ukrainian military has criticized SpaceX founder Elon Musk for not doing enough to stop Starlink's illegal use by Russia.
Some believe the terminals were a key factor in Ukraine’s recent losses, including the fall of Vuhledar.
Investigations revealed that Russian forces obtain Starlink systems through Telegram and other online platforms, often starting from Europe and moving through intermediaries like the UAE.
U.S. and Ukrainian governments are working with SpaceX to block Russia’s access, with SpaceX stating that they will deactivate terminals used by unauthorized parties.
Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives is investigating SpaceX’s role in Russia’s military use of Starlink.
