Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's recent comments on the U.S. presidential debates have sparked significant backlash in the West.
A "Sad Spectacle"
According to German media reports, Lavrov's remarks have not gone unnoticed, particularly following the recent debate between President Joe Biden and Republican leader Donald Trump.
As reported by Frankfurter Rundschau, Lavrov did not hold back in his critique, describing the American debates as a "sad spectacle." He further insinuated that the entire U.S. election campaign appeared staged and preplanned. Lavrov’s comments came amidst heightened scrutiny of Biden’s performance, with many experts agreeing that he lost the debate to Trump.
“Greetings from Russia: Putin’s minister Lavrov mocks Biden and Trump after their TV duel,” wrote the authors from the German publication.
Lavrov's derisive remarks have added to the pressure already mounting on Biden and his team.
According to Frankfurter Rundschau, Biden's poor debate performance has compounded existing doubts about his physical and mental fitness to serve another term, especially given his 81-year age. This has led to calls from within his own party for Biden to withdraw from the race.
German journalists expressed their indignation at Lavrov's comments, noting that the Russian diplomat’s mockery was particularly ill-timed. "Putin’s friend tears apart Trump and Biden in the U.S. election campaign," they reported.
Lavrov's comments come at a critical moment as Biden struggles with various challenges in his re-election campaign. His health and recent debate performance have raised questions about his capability to continue, leading to internal party discussions about his candidacy.
