Russian lawmaker Mikhail Sheremet warned that Ukraine's ongoing offensive, supported by Western allies, is bringing the world dangerously close to a global war.
On the Brink of World War III
Sheremet's comments, reported by Russian news agency RIA and cited by Hotnews, follow significant Ukrainian advances into Russia's Kursk region.
Since August 6, Ukrainian troops have crossed the border and made considerable progress, leading to the evacuation of over 200,000 people from their homes in Kursk.
Sheremet, a member of the Russian parliament's defense committee, echoed President Vladimir Putin's rhetoric. He suggested that the use of Western military equipment and ammunition in attacks on Russian infrastructure is alarming.
Sheremet also pointed to undeniable evidence of foreign involvement. According to him, these factors indicate that the world is on the brink of World War III. This assertion reflects a heightened level of alarm from Russian officials regarding the conflict's potential escalation.
Accuses West of Involvement
Nikolai Patrushev, a close aide to Putin, also accused the West of orchestrating the Kursk offensive.
In an interview with the newspaper Izvestia, Patrushev claimed that NATO and Western intelligence agencies were involved in planning the operation, though he provided no concrete evidence to support this allegation.
On the other side, Ukraine and its allies have pointed to Russia's support from countries like China, Iran, and North Korea.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his commitment to deepening cooperation with Russia and expressed confidence in Moscow's eventual victory in what he described as a "holy war for peace and justice."
