Ukrainian forces have captured seven advanced Russian tanks in the Kursk region, including several of the latest T-80BWM models. This acquisition marks a notable shift in the dynamics of the ongoing conflict.

Fourth T-80BWM

The Ukrainian military recently secured its fourth T-80BWM, adding to the three previously captured, according to WP.

This latest addition joins one T-90M and two T-72 tanks. According to Ukrainian sources, the latter two are in poor condition and require extensive repairs. The capture of these tanks not only provides a strategic advantage but also underscores the challenges facing Russian tank production.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates that Russia currently produces between 60 to 90 T-90M tanks annually and up to 150 T-80BWM tanks per year.

However, these T-80BWM tanks are modified versions of the older T-80B/BW, which are increasingly scarce in Russian inventories.

Most Advanced Russian Tanks

Satellite imagery and analysis from the Covert Cabal group suggest that, out of approximately 1,200 to 1,600 tanks before the war, fewer than 300 are visible in Russian depots as of mid-2024. Optimistic estimates indicate that fewer than 500 T-80B/BW tanks remain, with many likely in deteriorated condition.

The T-80BWM is one of Russia’s most advanced tanks, incorporating modern upgrades such as reactive armor and an advanced fire control system.

Despite its capabilities, including the ability to withstand drone attacks and mislead Javelin missiles, the T-80BWM's turbine engine produces intense heat and poses maintenance challenges.

The tank's automated loading system, while advanced, has been criticized for its safety risks, although such incidents are less frequent compared to older T-72/T-90 models.
