Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov revealed that an attempted assassination on President Vladimir Putin was thwarted.

Attempted on Naval Day

According to URA the attack, allegedly planned by Ukrainian intelligence services, was to take place during the Naval Day parade on July 28 in St. Petersburg. Here’s what is known about the foiled plot.

Early in the summer, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin engaged in multiple phone discussions on critical matters.

Ryabkov noted that a signal from the Russian side, communicated through these discussions, was received and understood in Washington and other U.S.-allied capitals.

This signal was crucial in averting the planned assassination attempt on Putin during the Naval Day parade.

Maximum Damage and Impacts

Discussing the intended operation, Ryabkov indicated it was linked to internal events in Russia and aimed at causing significant damage and generating extensive media coverage.

When questioned about the connection between the plot and the Naval Day parade, Ryabkov refrained from elaborating but confirmed there was a specific link to such events.

"The specific episode was very alarming. As usual with them, it was planned in conjunction with our internal events to cause maximum damage and achieve maximum media impact," Ryabkov stated during a broadcast on the "Russia-1" TV channel.
