In a recent interview on Russia's Channel One, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov likened the current global tensions to the Doomsday Clock, suggesting it stands at two minutes to midnight.
Two Minutes to Midnight
Despite this dire metaphor, Ryabkov emphasized that the clock's progression towards catastrophe can be reversed, provided that new escalations are avoided.
Ryabkov stated, "I would say the clock is currently showing something like two minutes to midnight, but this does not mean that the clock's movement is irreversible and that the Doomsday Clock will start striking."
This statement underscores the precarious nature of the current geopolitical landscape and the urgency of addressing rising tensions.
Necessity for International Negotiations
The deputy minister highlighted the necessity of international negotiations to defuse the situation. He stressed that these negotiations must be reciprocal and not based on unilateral concessions. This call for balanced dialogue reflects the broader challenges of achieving mutual understanding in a time of heightened global conflict.
Earlier, Ryabkov mentioned that Moscow and Washington were able to avert a recent escalation thanks to direct communication between Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. On July 12, Belousov called Austin to warn of an impending Ukrainian operation against Russia. The Pentagon's intervention reportedly prevented the operation, illustrating the critical role of diplomacy and direct communication in maintaining global stability.
