A Russian military intelligence agent embedded within Ukraine’s Armed Forces has been detained by Ukrainian counterintelligence, according to a statement from the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR) on March 25.
The mole was operating in the Sumy region.
According to HUR, he had been recruited online through a pro-Russian Telegram channel and was assisting Russian forces by adjusting artillery strikes and gathering intelligence on Ukrainian military positions—specifically targeting sensitive electronic warfare and artillery assets.
The agent initially drew attention by expressing support for Russia in online forums. According to Ukrainian investigators, that digital trail led to his recruitment by Russian intelligence.
His assignment was to infiltrate Ukraine’s military and transmit targeting data to aid Russian operations in the increasingly contested Kursk region.
To carry out the mission, the individual enlisted in a Ukrainian military unit located in a rear region. He later secured a transfer to a combat brigade stationed along the front lines near the Russia-Ukraine border.
Once embedded, he began collecting sensitive battlefield data, including coordinates of Ukrainian radio-electronic warfare systems and self-propelled artillery units.
The mole’s intelligence-gathering methods were detailed in the HUR statement: using secure messaging apps, he sent geolocated maps, photos of Ukrainian military hardware, and commentary directly to his Russian handler.
Ukrainian forces believe the intel was being used to guide missile and bomb strikes on their positions.
But the agent's activity did not go unnoticed.
According to officials, Ukrainian military counterintelligence began monitoring him early in his mission. A full investigation was launched to secure targeted areas and document every action he took.
The operation culminated in the agent’s arrest “in the act,” while preparing a new intelligence report for Russia’s military command.
