This was the case during a recent Russian Premier League match where fans took the focus off the game with a controversial banner supporting the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
During Zenit Saint Petersburg’s home match against Akron Togliatti on December 7, a banner appeared in the stands at Gazprom Arena, according to WP.
The display depicted Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.
A Russian soldier stood against the national flag with the words, "This is our land, and we will stand here," emblazoned across the banner.
Maintain Suspension
The message, widely condemned, has drawn ire on social media.
A post on the "Zorya Londonsk" account, a platform for discussing Ukrainian soccer, called it "another reason for UEFA/FIFA to maintain their suspension" of Russian teams from international play.
The account shared a photo of the banner, further amplifying the criticism.
This incident comes against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
The war has devastated Ukraine, with estimates of 80,000 deaths and 400,000 injuries among Ukrainians. Many view displays like the one at Gazprom Arena as not just inappropriate but a painful provocation.
