Russian troops preparing for an assault in the town of Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast were forced to retreat after suffering losses, according to a statement from Ukraine on August 29.

The Kharkiv group of forces reported via Telegram that Russian soldiers were moving with two tanks and two other armored vehicles as part of their assault preparations. However, the operation did not go as planned, and the Russian forces were compelled to withdraw.

The exact number of casualties was not disclosed.

Vovchansk is located about 60 kilometers (37 miles) northeast of Kharkiv.

The town has been a hotspot of intense fighting since Russia launched a new offensive in the region in May.

Although Russian forces initially made some advances, their progress has since stalled, with heavy losses reported.

On August 20, the Kharkiv group noted an increase in Russian aerial reconnaissance, signaling preparations for further assault operations.

Despite these efforts, the offensive in northern Kharkiv Oblast has largely bogged down, with Russian forces struggling to maintain momentum and facing strong Ukrainian resistance.

While the intensity of fighting in Vovchansk has decreased compared to other areas, reports continue to emerge of Russia gearing up for new attacks.

Some military analysts suggest that this offensive may have been intended to stretch Ukrainian forces thin as Russia escalates its push in Donetsk Oblast, particularly targeting towns like Pokrovsk, Toretsk, and Chasiv Yar.
