Spain delivered nearly half of its total artillery ammunition production to Ukraine between 2023 and mid-2024, according to a detailed report by Spanish defense outlet Infodefensa.

The deliveries included thousands of artillery and mortar rounds—amounting to a total of $216 million in ammunition purchases alone.

According to the report, Ukraine spent $295 million on military purchases from Spain during this 18-month period, and 70% of that went to ammunition. Key Spanish manufacturers, including Rheinmetall Expal Munitions and the Grenade Ammunition Factory, were responsible for fulfilling the orders.

Breakdown of Ukraine’s purchases from Spain:

In 2023:

  • 55,950 rounds of 155mm artillery shells ($74.6 million)

  • 21,520 rounds of 120mm mortar shells ($11.4 million)

  • 11 missiles of an undisclosed type ($18.2 million)

In the first half of 2024:

  • 89,200 rounds of 155mm artillery shells ($128.2 million)

  • 23,000 rounds of 120mm mortar shells

  • These figures represented 100% of Spain’s direct commercial sales of artillery ammunition during that period.

Although there’s no confirmation of continued deliveries in the latter half of 2024, the volume already sent amounted to nearly 50% of Spain’s total artillery ammo production, according to Infodefensa.

Ammunition Flow Amid Broader Military Aid

Spain’s direct sales were complemented by official military aid packages, including significant equipment deliveries. By June 2023, Spain had equipped Ukraine with almost a full brigade’s worth of gear, including a company of Leopard 2A4 tanks.

By March 2024, total Spanish military aid reached $205 million.

While this represents a major contribution to Ukraine’s defense, it still accounted for only 4% of Spain’s total defense exports in 2023, which stood at $4 billion. During the first half of 2024, Spain’s total defense exports were valued at $2 billion.

Spain Also Preparing for Domestic Defense

In parallel with increasing military exports and aid, Spanish authorities have also been preparing for potential conflict scenarios closer to home. The government recently unveiled its first-ever national civil defense plan, which outlines emergency protocols in the event of a war affecting Spanish territory.

The plan is part of the Second National Civil Defense Strategy, a five-year program adopted by Spain’s National Security Council to enhance domestic readiness.
