A recent independent sociological study reveals that 49% of Russians are ready to support the withdrawal of troops from Ukraine and engage in peace negotiations, even if it means not achieving Russia's initial military objectives.
800 Russians Participated
The survey, conducted by the research group "Cronici" in collaboration with Extreme Sun, interviewed 800 Russian adults by phone between September 10 and 17, 2023, according to Ziare.
The survey's findings come at a critical time, as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues.
The data shows a growing trend among Russians who favor de-escalation. In February 2023, only 40% of respondents supported peace talks, compared to 49% in this most recent study.
A Shift in Public Opinion
Meanwhile, opposition to withdrawing troops has decreased, with 33% of respondents opposing peace talks compared to 47% earlier in the year. An additional 3% refused to answer, and 18% expressed uncertainty.
Notably, the survey also explored attitudes toward future military mobilizations. When asked to choose between further mobilization and peace, 49% of respondents expressed a preference for peace, while only 29% supported continued mobilization.
The rest of the respondents, 22%, declined to answer.
These shifts in public opinion highlight a growing desire for peace and a possible war fatigue among the Russian population. As researchers point out, the rise in support for withdrawing troops is the highest it has been since the surveys began earlier in 2023.
