Ukraine and the United States are set to begin discussions next week regarding the technical details of a proposed 30-day ceasefire, which Kyiv has agreed to in principle—provided Russia also accepts the terms. The announcement was made by Andrii Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, following high-level talks in Saudi Arabia.
Ceasefire Proposal and U.S. Role
Yermak was part of the Ukrainian delegation that met with U.S. officials in Jeddah on Tuesday. During the meeting, Kyiv agreed to the U.S.-backed proposal for a temporary ceasefire, intended as a step toward peace negotiations with Russia. However, Washington has yet to formally present the plan to Moscow.
According to Yermak, the discussions between the U.S. and Ukraine also included potential security guarantees that could be offered to Kyiv in the event of a peace agreement. "We know exactly what we need. Our American partners understand this well. They have a positive attitude, but conversations are ongoing," he stated.
Next Steps in Negotiations
While Ukraine has expressed willingness to pause hostilities, the success of the ceasefire proposal depends on Russia’s response. So far, Russian officials have indicated skepticism about a short-term truce, suggesting they would require broader assurances before considering such an agreement.
The upcoming U.S.-Ukraine talks will clarify Kyiv’s conditions and explore what guarantees could be put in place if a peace deal is eventually reached.
