After two years of rigorous testing in battlefield conditions, Ukraine has successfully launched full-scale production of its domestically made 2S22 Bogdana howitzers.
20 Units per Month
According to Ukrainian officials cited by WP, production has ramped up to an impressive rate of 20 units per month.
The 2S22 Bogdana, a 155mm caliber, truck-mounted artillery system, marks Ukraine’s first artillery system built to NATO standards.
The Bogdana resembles France’s CAESAR system, mounted on an 8x8 Tatra Phoenix truck frame rather than the initially used KrAZ-63221.
The Tatra frame has proven effective in Ukrainian manufacturing and includes an armored cab reinforced with bar armor for added protection against Russian cluster munitions and FPV drones.
Maximizes Destructive Impact
This howitzer is designed for mobility and ease of production, making it distinct from heavily armored tracked systems like Poland’s AHS Krab or Germany’s PzH-2000.
The semi-automatic loading system requires only minimal handling, which enables a high firing rate of up to six rounds per minute.
In terms of range, the Bogdana’s capabilities vary with ammunition type. Standard DM121 shells allow for an effective range of up to 30 kilometers. However, when using rocket-assisted M549A1 rounds, the howitzer can hit targets as far as 60 kilometers away.
The system is also compatible with M982 Excalibur guided rounds, which can reach beyond 50 kilometers but face limitations from GPS jamming technologies.
Additionally, the Bogdana can operate in MRSI (Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact) mode, enabling it to deliver several shells that strike a target simultaneously.
This feature maximizes destructive impact and gives the Ukrainian howitzer a distinct advantage over Russian artillery of 122mm and 152mm calibers, outperforming in range, precision, and firepower.
