Ukrainian forces have deployed American-made GBU-39 guided bombs during their offensive in Russia's Kursk region. This marks an escalation in the use of advanced Western weaponry by Ukraine as it continues to resist Russian military aggression, according to Tech.

Confirmed by Commander of Air Force

The use of the GBU-39 bombs was confirmed by Mykola Oleshchuk, the commander of the Ukrainian Air Force.

Videos circulating on social media have shown Ukrainian aircraft striking Russian positions, reportedly using these precision-guided munitions.

The GBU-39 is a small-diameter bomb produced by the American aerospace giant Boeing. Known for its precision, the bomb has an accuracy of around 5-8 meters, thanks to its GPS guidance system and deployable wings that allow it to glide over long distances.

When dropped from high altitudes, the bomb can hit targets up to 110 kilometers away. The GBU-39 is equipped with a 93 kg warhead, capable of functioning in various modes, including airburst and delayed detonation.

Not Used in Russia Before

This isn’t the first time Ukraine has used the GBU-39, but previously it was only deployed on Ukrainian territory occupied by Russian forces.

What’s new is its use beyond Ukraine’s borders in the Kursk region, showing a growing capability of the Ukrainian military to strike deeper into Russian-held areas.

In addition to the GBU-39, Ukrainian forces have also continued using the HIMARS rocket artillery system in Kursk.

Videos have shown HIMARS, which has already proven effective in previous operations, being used to target Russian military assets, including a pontoon bridge.
