Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has released new footage confirming the use of German-made Marder infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) in the ongoing offensive in Russia's Kursk region.

Holding 1263 Square Kilometers in Kursk

The video, which showcases the Marders in action, is a testament to Ukraine's growing reliance on NATO-supplied military equipment as it pushes forward in its counteroffensive against Russian forces, according to Tech.

On August 20, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, announced that Ukrainian forces had expanded their control in the Kursk region, now holding over 1,263 square kilometers of territory.

This territorial gain has been supported by some of Ukraine's elite brigades, which have been equipped with advanced NATO weaponry, including the Marder 1A3 IFVs.

From the 60s but Very Effective

The Marder, a German vehicle originally developed in the 1960s by the Rheinstahl company, has proven to be a valuable asset on the battlefield. Ukraine has received dozens of these vehicles, primarily from Germany, since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion.

Despite its age, the Marder 1A3 remains highly effective due to modern upgrades, including reinforced front armor and a thermal imaging sight for the gunner.

The Marder 1A3 is armed with a 20mm Rheinmetall autocannon, which has a range of approximately 2.5 kilometers, a Milan anti-tank missile launcher capable of hitting targets up to 2 kilometers away, and two 7.62mm machine guns.

This combination of firepower is highly valued by Ukrainian forces for its versatility and effectiveness in combat.

Measuring nearly 23 feet in length, the Marder 1A3 can carry up to 10 soldiers, including a crew of three. Powered by a nearly 600-horsepower engine, it can reach speeds of up to 47 mph, and its tracked design allows it to navigate difficult terrain with ease.
