Ukraine has confirmed the death of Captain Oleksandr Myhula, a 27-year-old pilot flying a MiG-29 fighter jet, during a combat mission.

Shot Down in Combat

According to Tech Captain Myhula, a decorated member of Ukraine’s 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, had completed 160 combat missions and was recognized for his bravery.

His aircraft was reportedly shot down by a Russian Su-30, a superior aircraft in terms of firepower, radar capabilities, and support from early-warning systems.

The loss of Captain Myhula is a significant blow to Ukraine, not only due to the loss of a highly experienced pilot but also because of the strain it places on Ukraine’s already diminished air force.

Both Sides Takes Hits

Before Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine had around 37 MiG-29s in its fleet. However, over two years of intense conflict have taken a heavy toll. According to reports, Ukraine has lost at least 27 MiG-29s since the war began, significantly weakening its air combat capabilities.

Despite these losses, Ukraine has managed to replenish some of its fleet with MiG-29s provided by Poland and Slovakia. These reinforcements, totaling around 27 combat-ready aircraft, have been crucial in maintaining Ukraine’s aerial defense.

Russia's air superiority has been bolstered by its use of advanced aircraft like the Su-30 and A-50 early-warning planes, which can monitor Ukrainian airspace from within Russian territory. However, Ukraine is set to receive two Saab 340 AEW planes from Sweden, which will help counterbalance Russia's advantage in air surveillance.
