In the ongoing war in Ukraine, security has become a major concern as both sides work to gather intelligence.

Recently, the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) uncovered a large network of Russian spies operating in several regions of Ukraine.

The spies were particularly focused on obtaining sensitive information about the newly arrived F-16 fighter jets, which have become a key part of Ukraine’s defense strategy, writes WPTech.

The SBU revealed that they had arrested twelve Russian agents who were working in five different Ukrainian regions.

These spies were gathering information on Ukraine’s air defense systems and the locations of airfields where the F-16s were stationed.

Some of the arrested agents had deserted from the Ukrainian army and were recruited by Russian intelligence while in hiding.

The spies worked independently, with a leader based in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The F-16 fighters, provided by Western countries, are considered one of Ukraine's most valuable assets.

These modified F-16A/B MLU versions have advanced radars and are capable of using a wider range of weapons, including the AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, which have a range of about 100 kilometers.

Ukrainian pilots have praised the F-16s for their effectiveness, especially when compared to older Soviet-era jets.

In December, these F-16s played a critical role in defending Ukraine against Russian missile attacks.

During a massive shelling, the fighters successfully shot down 11 Russian cruise missiles, showcasing their effectiveness in the ongoing conflict.

Following the arrests, Ukrainian authorities conducted searches, seizing phones, data storage devices, military documents, and forged identity papers.

The leader of the spy group and his key accomplices have been arrested.

Those involved in espionage in Ukraine face severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and possible property confiscation.
