The 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade of Ukraine, informally known as the "Ghosts," has been making waves with its unique MiG‑29 fighter jets.

Play a Vital Role

According to Tech these aircraft, crucial to Ukraine's air defense, are now flying in distinctive black livery, a visual testament to their significance in the ongoing conflict.

The Ukrainian Air Force currently relies heavily on the MiG‑29 due to the depletion of its Su-27 fleet, which has suffered significant losses and wear over time.

Unlike the Su-27, the MiG‑29s have a more stable supply chain, with maintenance support available from countries like Poland and Bulgaria. Additionally, Ukraine has received over 20 MiG‑29s from Poland and Slovakia, bolstering its air capabilities.

These aircraft play a vital role in protecting Ukraine’s Su-24 and Su-25 planes, which are essential for the country's defense.

Remains Primary Fighter

Even as Ukraine anticipates the arrival of F-16s, the MiG‑29 remains the primary fighter for the Ukrainian Air Force. The 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, or the "Ghosts," is at the forefront of these operations, with their MiG‑29s adapted for both air superiority and ground attack roles.

These jets are equipped with short-range R-73 and older R-27 missiles, along with improvised Western weaponry like the AIM-7 Sparrow and AGM-88 HARM.

The "Ghosts" have also been utilizing advanced Western-guided bombs like the JDAM-ER and GBU-39 SDB, as well as the French AASM Hammer, to conduct precise strikes against enemy targets, even in heavily defended areas.

Their expertise and adaptability have made the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade a formidable force in the skies, embodying the spirit of resilience that defines Ukraine’s defense efforts.
