Ukraine has unveiled new details about its latest military advancement, the Grom-2 ballistic missile, a development that could significantly alter the dynamics of its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Succesfully Tested

According to Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the missile boasts an impressive range of 600-700 kilometers, bringing key Russian targets, including Moscow, within its reach.

President Zelensky announced the successful test of the Grom-2 on August 27, 2023. While specific details were initially scarce, Podolyak later confirmed the missile’s range in an interview with Novina Live, according to WP.

The Ukrainian defense industry has been working on the Grom-2 for nearly two decades, with its first test launch dating back to 2018.

Effective even if it Misses

The Grom-2 is comparable to Russia’s Iskander-M missile, known for its precision and destructive power.

It can be launched from specialized mobile platforms, and its large warheads ensure high effectiveness even if the missile misses its target by several meters.

The missile's ability to strike "high-value targets" deep within Russian territory, such as the Engels Air Force Base, where Russia's strategic bombers are stationed, is particularly significant.

Notably, Ukrainian forces successfully tested the Grom-2 again in 2023, and there is speculation that it may have been used in the attack on Russia's Saki Air Base in Crimea in 2022. The Ukrainian military continues to refine this weapon, focusing on improving its resistance to GPS jamming, which could hinder its precision.
