On the night of September 7, drones operated by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) struck an ammunition and military equipment warehouse in Voronezh Oblast, Russia, according to an SBU source reported by the Kyiv Independent.
Russian authorities confirmed a drone attack and subsequent fire at an unspecified facility earlier in the day.
Local Telegram channels identified the site as an ammunition storage facility near the village of Soldatskoye. This claim was later supported by the SBU.
Soldatskoye is located about 70 kilometers (over 40 miles) south of Voronezh and more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of the Ukrainian border.
The SBU source indicated that the targeted warehouse was a key supply point for Russian forces in Ukraine, which justified the drone strike.
The attack triggered chain explosions of the stored ammunition, resulting in at least four significant fires.
In response, Voronezh Oblast Governor Alexander Gusev announced temporary evacuations for residents in several settlements within the Ostrogozhsky district. He advised residents to avoid the area and refrain from sharing images of the fire.
Gusev also noted a similar incident in the Ostrogozhsky district on August 24, which also involved fires and explosions caused by drone strikes on an ammunition depot.
Ukrainian forces have previously targeted military airfields, oil refineries, and ammunition depots in Voronezh Oblast.
