The recent Ukrainian offensive near Kursk has significantly affected not only territorial control but also Russia's critical military logistics.

Area the Size of Los Angeles

By capturing an area roughly the size of Los Angeles, Ukrainian forces have put immense pressure on Russia's rail system, which is vital for troop and supply movement, according to Ziare.

Russia heavily relies on its railways for military transport, a strategy rooted in historical preference over truck convoys. However, as Ukraine has advanced, the influx of approximately 30,000 Russian soldiers to counter this offensive has overwhelmed local train stations, resulting in a severe shortage of locomotives.

The situation has become so dire that the Central Office of Russian Railways (RZD) has urgently requested Belarus to halt freight shipments to Russia, as their system struggles to cope with the increased load.

Acces to Railway Stations

The Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) have reportedly gained access to a railway station inside Russia, creating chaos in transport operations and providing valuable intelligence on troop movements. Analysts, like Paul Con, indicate that Russia's fully digitalized railway system can be exploited once any station is compromised.

Additionally, civilian evacuations following the Ukrainian incursion have exacerbated the situation, with an estimated 133,000 people fleeing the region since the AFU crossed the border on August 6. This mass exodus has further strained Russian railway operations, particularly on routes connecting Moscow and the border regions.

As Ukraine continues to push into Russian territory, reports suggest they may have infiltrated the RZD's IT systems, tracking military transport routes and creating significant headaches for Russian IT specialists.

With the ongoing challenges faced by Russian railways, including prior maintenance issues and the effects of Western sanctions, the implications of this disruption could prove critical for the outcome of the ongoing conflict.
