Ukrainian forces successfully struck the Russian submarine "Rostov-on-Don" in the military port of Sevastopol. According to the General Staff of Ukraine, the submarine sank immediately upon impact. Additionally, Ukraine reported the destruction of a Russian S-400 Triumph missile system in occupied Crimea, according to Tech.
Maximum Damage
The B-237 "Rostov-on-Don" submarine, part of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, was targeted and sunk in Sevastopol's port. Despite previous Russian statements about repairing the vessel, this meticulously planned Ukrainian operation aimed to inflict maximum damage on the adversary.
Earlier this year, Ukrainian forces had also attacked the "Rostov-on-Don" with Storm Shadow cruise missiles, causing severe damage to the submarine's bow and central sections.
Specifications of the "Rostov-on-Don" Submarine
The "Rostov-on-Don" (B-237) is a Kilo-class submarine, specifically Project 636.3, known for its diesel-electric propulsion. These submarines are primarily used for coastal operations and are valued for their stealth, making them difficult to detect by enemy forces. Key features of the Kilo-class submarines include:
Displacement: Approximately 3,000 tons on the surface and 4,000 tons when submerged
Length: Around 74 meters
Speed: Up to 17-20 knots submerged
Range: Up to 7,500 nautical miles at 7 knots on the surface
Armament: Torpedoes, mines, and Kalibr (3M54) anti-ship missiles
Destruction of the S-400 System
These submarines are designed for a variety of missions, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, protection of naval routes, and reconnaissance missions. The "Rostov-on-Don" has been one of the modern additions to the Russian Navy's fleet in recent years.
In addition to the submarine, the Ukrainian attack targeted the advanced S-400 Triumph air defense system. According to Defence Express, four launchers of this system were significantly damaged in the strike. The General Staff of Ukraine also noted a fire at one of the S-400 positions near Sevastopol, corroborated by data from NASA FIRMS.
