Ukrainian forces are employing advanced FPV (first-person view) drones to strike deeper into Russian-controlled territories, targeting high-value artillery systems.

Difficult to Destroy

Among the priority targets are Russia's self-propelled Msta-S howitzers, a formidable weapon capable of long-range attacks. One such Msta-S was recently destroyed in a drone strike, marking a significant win for Ukraine's evolving drone warfare strategy, according to WP.

Artillery has played a crucial role in the ongoing conflict, serving as the second most important asset after air power.

In modern warfare, self-propelled artillery systems like the Msta-S are prized for their mobility and ability to launch a quick barrage before relocating to avoid counterattacks.

This makes them difficult to destroy — yet highly sought-after targets for Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine has recently increased its use of FPV drones to take out these systems, mimicking Russian tactics using Lancet-3 drones to target Ukrainian assets like Poland-supplied Krab howitzers.

These drones, often rigged with explosives for less than $1,000, offer an affordable yet highly effective solution.

The Msta-S howitzer, introduced into Russian service in 1989, is armed with a powerful 152mm gun capable of striking targets up to 25 kilometers away. With advanced ammunition, its range can extend to 36 kilometers, making it one of the most dangerous artillery systems in Russia’s arsenal.
