As reported by Wirtualna Polska, the Ukrainian Navy has successfully intercepted a Russian Kh-59 missile using the VAMPIRE system. The missile, launched from a Russian Su-57 fighter jet, was targeting civilian infrastructure at the commercial port of Pivdennyi.
This event marks the first publicly documented instance of the VAMPIRE system being used against such a target.
On January 25, Ukrainian forces released footage of the interception, showcasing the system's effectiveness in real combat conditions.
Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System in action
According to the Ukrainian Navy’s official Telegram channel, the interception was carried out by a surface-to-air missile launched from a patrol boat.
While specific details about the vessel and weapon system were not disclosed, military analysts suggest that the Vehicle-Agnostic Modular ISR Rocket Equipment (VAMPIRE) system was employed.
This system utilizes the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS), a laser-guided modification of standard 70 mm rockets, offering high precision even in challenging combat environments.
Key features of the VAMPIRE system
Developed by the American company L3Harris, the VAMPIRE system is a lightweight, mobile air defense solution designed primarily to counter drones and lightly armored ground targets. Its modular design allows for rapid deployment on a variety of platforms, including civilian and military vehicles.
The system’s primary armament includes APKWS missiles, which provide a cost-effective alternative to more advanced air defense systems.
As noted by Wirtualna Polska, this affordability makes it an attractive option for defending against modern aerial threats while maintaining operational flexibility.
Strategic implications for Ukraine
The successful use of the VAMPIRE system highlights Ukraine’s growing capability to defend its infrastructure from Russian missile attacks.
As the conflict continues, the deployment of such cost-effective and adaptable defense systems could play a critical role in countering aerial threats and enhancing national security.
With this interception, Ukraine has demonstrated the VAMPIRE system’s potential to protect key assets, offering a significant morale boost to its armed forces and allies.
