Russia has increasingly deployed Shahed drones, not only to strike targets but to map out Ukrainian air defenses, identifying weaknesses for future attacks.

Challenging Economic Dilemma

These drones, which cost a fraction of the missiles used to intercept them, have become a strategic tool in Russia’s arsenal, creating a financial and logistical strain on Ukraine’s defensive resources.

Intercepting Shaheds presents a challenging economic dilemma for Ukraine. While each Shahed drone costs only tens of thousands of dollars, intercepting them with traditional anti-aircraft systems can be far more expensive.

In some cases, Ukraine has had to use high-cost missiles, including those from the Patriot system, where each missile can cost several million dollars, according to WP.

To manage costs more effectively, Ukraine has begun deploying lower-cost defense systems, including the German-made Gepard anti-aircraft guns, which offer a far more economical option.

Depending on the number of rounds used, Gepard engagements range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of euros.

Another efficient solution is the U.S.-made VAMPIRE system, an inexpensive air-defense system designed to counter drones like the Shahed. Each VAMPIRE missile costs approximately $13,000, making it a more cost-effective option.

The VAMPIRE system, officially known as Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment, is a lightweight platform that can be mounted on pick-up trucks and other vehicles.

Equipped with thermal cameras, laser targeting, and the LAND-LGR4 rocket launcher, VAMPIRE utilizes APKWS-guided rockets.

These rockets are converted from widely available 70mm Hydra rockets, refitted with a laser guidance module and deployable control surfaces, enabling high precision at a low cost.

Capable of targeting slow-moving aerial threats within a 6 km range, VAMPIRE is ideal for intercepting Shahed drones. This budget-friendly system combines precision with affordability, giving Ukraine a viable means to counter drone threats without exhausting its expensive missile stockpiles.
