A video circulating online has raised alarms in Australia and abroad. The footage claims to show an Australian man captured by Russian forces while fighting for Ukraine.
As officials in Canberra scramble to verify its authenticity, the case has sparked questions about the risks faced by foreign volunteers in the conflict.
The man in the video identifies himself as Oscar Jenkins, a 32-year-old Australian. He is seen with his hands bound, wearing military gear, and visibly distressed.
Speaking in English and broken Russian, he says he lives in both Australia and Ukraine and is studying biology.
During the clip, Jenkins is struck with what appears to be a stick while answering questions from an unseen interrogator.
Stand With Oscar
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called the situation “deeply troubling.”
He said that the government is working through its embassy in Moscow and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to gather information.
“We always prioritize the safety and well-being of Australians. If this video is legitimate, we’ll take all necessary steps to assist,” Albanese stated.
However, he also warned that Russian authorities often spread misinformation, urging caution until facts are confirmed.
The Federation of Ukrainian Organizations in Australia (AFUO) expressed outrage over Jenkins’ reported capture. In a statement, they described the situation as “horrific” and called for urgent action to secure his release.
“Oscar chose to stand with Ukraine against an illegal invasion. As Australians, we must stand with him now,” the organization said.
Social media profiles linked to Jenkins reveal his active promotion of veganism and past roles as a lecturer and language teacher in China.
One 2023 YouTube video features Jenkins discussing his mission to advocate for veganism in China.
The Russian journalist who initially shared the video hinted at potential legal consequences for Jenkins, including trial and forced labor.
While no official statements have been made by Moscow, the case underscores the peril faced by international volunteers in Ukraine’s ongoing war.
The Australian government continues its investigation and has pledged to support Jenkins and his family in any way possible.
