The Ukrainian military has recently unveiled its new Skynex air defense system, showcasing its capabilities in a demonstration that highlights a potential leap into the future of military technology.

1,000 Rounds Per Minute

As reported by Defense Express and Digi24, this advanced system from Rheinmetall, received by Ukraine in April 2023, has been operationally utilized for the first time during training exercises and combat operations.

The demonstration featured impressive operational aspects, including a high firing rate of 1,000 rounds per minute and the deployment of AHEAD 35 mm munitions, which detonate in the air to maximize effectiveness.

The Western Air Command released footage illustrating various operational elements, including advanced fire control systems and crew procedures such as reloading.

Integrated Electro-Optical Tracking

The Skynex system is configured as a stationary platform, designed to protect specific high-value targets.

This setup simplifies maintenance, as the chassis is primarily needed for transport rather than continuous firing. During the demonstration, the reloading process was shown, with clips containing seven 35x228 mm cartridges, each weighing 1.7 kg (3.7 lbs).

These rounds can travel at an initial speed of 1,050 m/s (3,480 ft/s) and reach a maximum range of 5 km (3.1 miles) in just 8.2 seconds.

A standout feature of the Skynex system is its programmable detonation capability, with each round deploying 152 tungsten projectiles weighing 3.3 grams (0.12 oz) to create a cloud of fragments around the target. T

he system employs integrated electro-optical tracking and X-TAR3D surveillance radar, detecting targets up to 50 km (31 miles) away. Furthermore, the Skynex is designed for flexibility, capable of supporting a range of calibers and being mounted on various armored vehicles, making it a cornerstone of air defense in several EU countries.
