Diplomatic efforts have played a crucial role in conflicts throughout history.

When wars drag on, governments and international organizations search for ways to negotiate settlements that can lead to lasting peace.

In some cases, negotiations bring real progress. In others, they fail to address the root causes of war, leaving unresolved tensions.

The ongoing war in Ukraine has raised concerns about how and when peace talks might take place, and who will be involved in shaping the outcome.

Might Declare Peace

During a meeting in Kyiv with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that any negotiations between Russia and Western nations must include Ukraine.

He warned that discussions excluding Ukraine would not produce meaningful results. He urged the United States, the European Union, and Russia to establish a structured format for talks that guarantees Ukraine’s participation.

His concerns come as speculation grows about possible diplomatic efforts following Donald Trump’s return to the White House, according to Digi24.

The Kremlin has expressed willingness to engage in discussions, with Russian President Vladimir Putin stating that Moscow is prepared to work with Washington on issues related to Ukraine.

No official steps toward negotiations have been taken, but statements from both sides suggest that talks may be considered.

Zelensky also warned that Russia might attempt to announce a unilateral peace declaration, creating a situation in which Ukraine is forced to accept terms without direct involvement.

He stated that peace must be negotiated through discussions that ensure fairness and security for Ukraine.

The Russian government has not set a timeline for talks and has said it is waiting for further signals from the United States.

Trump has previously called the war in Ukraine a situation that needs to be resolved quickly. He has also suggested the possibility of meeting with Putin soon.

At the same time, he has threatened additional economic measures against Russia if negotiations do not move forward.
