Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently voiced strong opposition to proposals aimed at resolving the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, specifically targeting a plan presented by Republican JD Vance.
Demilitarized Zones
In an interview with The New Yorker, Zelensky described any peace agreement that comes at Ukraine's expense as “unacceptable.”
Vance, who is aligning with Donald Trump in his campaign for the vice presidency, suggested a potential strategy for a future Trump administration that includes establishing a “demilitarized zone” in areas currently occupied by Russian forces, according to Digi24.
Zelensky dismissed this idea, stating, “The notion that the world should end this war at Ukraine's expense is unacceptable.” He emphasized that he does not view Vance's proposal as a legitimate peace plan.
Heading Toward Global Conflict
Furthermore, Zelensky warned that such an approach could escalate into a broader global conflict.
“If this were the plan, America would be heading toward a global conflict involving Israel, Lebanon, Iran, Taiwan, China, and many African nations,” he cautioned.
He expressed concern that legitimizing Russia's aggression would send a dangerous message: “I came, I conquered, now what I conquered is mine.”
Zelensky also criticized Trump’s understanding of the conflict, asserting that the former president lacks the knowledge necessary to effectively end the war in Ukraine, despite Trump's apparent confidence.
This statement shows the ongoing tension between Ukrainian leaders and some U.S. political figures who advocate for compromises that could undermine Ukraine's sovereignty.
