On Tuesday, police in the Northern Territory of Australia received a report that a young girl had been attacked and possibly killed by a crocodile.
She was last seen swimming in Mango Creek, a river located a little southwest of Darwin, on Tuesday afternoon local time.
The search began immediately, involving both police and volunteers.
There is still no sign of the missing girl, the police stated in a press release.
"It is tragic for all parents and family members to lose a child, and especially under circumstances like this," said Bent Potter to Australian ABC News.
The search is being conducted both on land and with the help of boats.
"Our thoughts go out to the family and the rest of the community," said Erica Gibson, according to The Guardian.
The area where the disappearance occurred is known to be home to over 100,000 crocodiles. The river system in the town of Palumpa hosts both saltwater and freshwater crocodiles.
Throughout Australia, signs warn against swimming in waters inhabited by crocodiles.
