A routine traffic stop in Vienna ended in tragedy when a 24-year-old man fled from police and later died in a car accident.
The incident began when a patrol crew from the Simmering city police command pulled over the man on Dittmanngasse for a standard driver and vehicle check, reports Kurier.
The driver and his passenger quickly became nervous and aggressive when officers discovered a drug scale with residue in the car.
When the police requested that the driver undergo a medical examination, he refused.
Suddenly, he jumped back into his car and sped away, dragging an officer several meters before breaking free. The officers gave chase but soon lost visual contact after the fleeing driver broke through a barrier.
The search for the suspect resumed, and a short time later, the fleeing car was spotted again in the area of Wildpretstrasse.
The officers observed the driver attempting to overtake another vehicle before crashing head-on into a parked truck trailer.
The 24-year-old was trapped inside his vehicle, and emergency responders had to use hydraulic equipment to free him.
Despite their efforts, an emergency doctor from the Vienna rescue service confirmed the man had died at the scene.
The Vienna traffic accident command is now investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.
