Typhoon Kong Ray has struck Taiwan, resulting in at least 27 injuries and the evacuation of 6,200 residents, reports Ukrinform.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled as a result of the storm, according to reports from Taiwanese officials and DW.

Initially classified as a Category 4 hurricane with winds exceeding 250 kilometers per hour, Kong Ray weakened overnight but still brought heavy rains and winds that triggered landslides across the island.

The eastern region of Taiwan is expected to receive up to 1.2 meters of rainfall.

In response to the severe weather, various cities and districts declared October 31 a public holiday.

Nearly 300 international flights were canceled, alongside all domestic flights and 139 ferry services to nearby islands.

While railway services remain operational, they are significantly reduced. Taiwan's financial markets were also closed in anticipation of the storm's impact.

To ensure safety, 6,200 individuals were evacuated from hazardous areas by Wednesday evening.

The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense reported that 36,000 military personnel are on standby to assist in rescue operations as needed.

Meteorologists have warned that Kong Ray could become the most powerful typhoon to hit Taiwan since 1996.

This follows the earlier devastation caused by Typhoon Kraton in early October, which resulted in two fatalities, 219 injuries, and one person still unaccounted for.

The ongoing challenges posed by extreme weather conditions highlight the need for continued preparedness and effective response strategies.
