A 91-year-old man was killed on Thursday in the town of Castril, Granada, after being attacked by a wild deer.

Wife Hospitalized

The deer also injured his 84-year-old wife and their 61-year-old son, who arrived to help his parents during the attack. The tragic incident took place on the family’s farm.

The elderly woman, who suffered injuries from the attack, is currently under observation at Baza Hospital and is expected to be transferred to a hospital in Granada’s capital for further care.

According to reports from El Economista, the son, who intervened to protect his parents, did not sustain any physical injuries and has since been released from the hospital.

More Aggressive Right Now

Castril’s mayor, Miguel Pérez, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing the elderly man as "much loved" by the community.

The mayor also mentioned that the town is considering declaring an official period of mourning in light of the tragic event. Pérez explained that the deer population has grown significantly in recent years, especially within the Sierra de Castril Natural Park, which borders the town.

The attack occurred during the deer’s rutting season, known as the "berrea," a time when deer are more aggressive and territorial.

While the exact details of the attack are still being investigated, it is believed that the deer entered the family’s private property, where they kept other animals, and attacked the elderly man first.

When his wife tried to intervene, the deer gored her as well. Their son, who rushed to the scene, reportedly shot the deer, but unfortunately, it was too late to save his father.

The attack occurred around 7:15 PM, when emergency services received a call from the family’s farm, located along the GR-9105 road between Almontaras and Los Cortijillos.

The 112 emergency hotline requested immediate assistance from the Guardia Civil, who arrived at the scene along with agents from Seprona, the environmental division of the Civil Guard. They are currently investigating the incident.

This tragic event has left the small town of Castril in shock, as residents mourn the loss of one of their own and support the family during this difficult time.
