At the 32nd International Defense Industry Exhibition (MSPO) in Kielce, Poland, Boeing announced its proposal to sell CH-47 Chinook helicopters to the Polish government.

No Official Decision

This announcement comes as the defense industry showcases advancements, including new Polish military technology like the Warmate 50 strike drone and the OSU-35K artillery system, according to WP.

While there has been no official decision regarding the purchase of the Chinook helicopters, aviation expert Łukasz Pacholski from Lotnictwo Aviation International shared his thoughts on whether Poland should consider Boeing’s offer.

According to Pacholski, the Chinook's popularity within NATO is a significant advantage. Countries such as Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany have already adopted the Chinook, making it a standard among NATO forces.

Not Many Options

Pacholski noted that Polish soldiers have experience with Chinooks from their operations in Afghanistan, indicating a familiarity with the aircraft’s capabilities.

He emphasized that Poland needs to replace its aging Soviet-era helicopters, like the Mi-17 and Mi-8, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The availability of spare parts for these older models has become a concern.

In evaluating the Chinook's potential, Pacholski stated, "In the heavy helicopter market, there aren’t many options. The Chinook has no weaknesses."

He believes that the aircraft is cost-effective and highly versatile, capable of transporting troops and military equipment while supporting Apache helicopters in combat operations.

Considering to buy up to 48

Regarding the number of helicopters Poland should acquire, Pacholski suggested purchasing between 24 and 48 Chinooks to bolster its military capabilities. With an increase in troop numbers, more heavy-lift helicopters are essential for Poland’s defense strategy.

The CH-47 Chinook, a dual-engine helicopter with a history dating back to the 1960s, boasts impressive specifications. It can carry over 10 tons of cargo and accommodate 33 passengers.

With a top speed exceeding 310 km/h and an operational range of about 750 km, the Chinook has proven itself as a reliable and versatile asset in military operations.
