German authorities have taken a significant step in counter-espionage efforts by arresting a Chinese national, identified as Yaqi X., for allegedly spying on behalf of a Chinese intelligence agency.

Sensitive Information on Flights, Cargo and Passengers

The arrest occurred after a federal judge at the Bundesgerichtshof issued a warrant, which was executed by officials from the Bundeskriminalamt (Federal Criminal Police Office) in Leipzig.

Yaqi X. was employed at a logistics company that operates at the Leipzig/Halle Airport, where she allegedly gathered sensitive information related to flights, cargo, and passengers, according to Tag24.

According to the German Federal Prosecutor's Office, this activity took place between mid-August 2023 and mid-February 2024. Reports indicate that Yaqi X. specifically transmitted details regarding the transport of military goods and individuals connected to a German arms company.

Not the First Time

This incident is part of a broader concern regarding Chinese espionage in Germany. Another individual, Jian G., has been in custody since April on similar charges of espionage for a foreign intelligence service. Jian is accused of passing information from the European Parliament and spying on Chinese dissidents in Germany.

The arrest of Yaqi X. highlights the growing vigilance of German authorities in addressing foreign espionage threats, particularly those originating from China. The implications of such actions raise questions about national security and the safeguarding of sensitive information in an increasingly interconnected world.

Germany’s ongoing investigation into these espionage activities underscores the complexities of international relations and the persistent threat posed by foreign intelligence operations within its borders.
