Pope Francis’ health has been a growing source of concern as he remains hospitalized for the twelfth consecutive day. At 88 years old, the pontiff is battling double pneumonia, a severe condition that has raised fears about his ability to continue leading the Catholic Church.

While Vatican officials report minor improvements, his condition remains serious, and medical experts warn that recovery could take considerable time.

Slow Recovery but No Immediate Danger

According to the Vatican’s latest statement, Pope Francis “rested well throughout the night,” and his condition has shown slight improvement.

Officials noted that there have been no further asthma-related respiratory crises and that some of his test results have stabilized, as reported by Digi24.

While the pope continues to receive oxygen, the frequency and dosage have been reduced. Vatican sources also confirmed that he is able to sit up, eat normally, and remains in good spirits.

Medical experts remain cautious. Italian infectious disease specialist Massimo Andreoni explained that pneumonia recovery in elderly patients is often prolonged, especially with existing health complications.

Anesthesiologist Elena Bignani echoed this sentiment, stating that more days of stable health will be necessary before the pope’s prognosis can improve.

A History of Health Struggles

This hospitalization marks Pope Francis’ fourth since 2021. Initially admitted for bronchitis, doctors later confirmed that he was suffering from double pneumonia, a potentially life-threatening lung infection.

The pope has previously undergone surgeries on his colon and abdomen and has faced mobility challenges in recent years.

The situation has sparked prayer gatherings worldwide, particularly in Latin America, where the Argentine-born pope is deeply revered.

Religious and political leaders have also expressed their support, urging prayers for his recovery.

Uncertainty Over the Future of His Papacy

As Pope Francis remains under medical care, speculation about his ability to fulfill his duties has resurfaced.

While canon law does not impose strict limitations due to illness, the pope himself has previously acknowledged the possibility of resignation should his health prevent him from leading effectively.

For now, Vatican officials insist that discussions about his succession are premature. However, with no clear timeline for his recovery, the Catholic Church is closely watching how his health evolves in the coming days.
