A Tragedy Unfolds
A night meant for celebration turned into a horrific tragedy in Kočani, North Macedonia, when a nightclub caught fire in the early hours of Sunday morning. The incident, reminiscent of Romania’s Colectiv nightclub fire, has left the nation in mourning.
According to reports, the fire broke out at the Pulse nightclub around 3:00 a.m. local time. Approximately 1,500 people were attending a concert by the popular hip-hop group DNK when pyrotechnics used inside the venue ignited the ceiling. The flames spread rapidly, causing panic and chaos as patrons scrambled to escape.
As reported by Digi24, eyewitnesses described a scene of terror as people struggled to exit the burning building, with many overcome by smoke.
Rising Death Toll and Widespread Injuries
Authorities have confirmed that at least 59 people have died, while over 155 have been injured. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue. Many of the victims suffered from severe burns and smoke inhalation, with dozens in critical condition.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene, but the intensity of the fire made rescue efforts challenging. Videos shared on social media show the club engulfed in flames, with people desperately trying to flee. The fire's rapid spread and the club’s crowded conditions contributed to the high number of casualties.
Government Response and Investigation
North Macedonia’s Prime Minister, Hristijan Mickoski, stated that the government is fully mobilized to handle the aftermath of the disaster and investigate its cause. Officials suspect that the use of fireworks indoors may have triggered the blaze, similar to past nightclub tragedies worldwide.
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has expressed condolences and offered support, stating that Romania stands in solidarity with North Macedonia during this difficult time. Interim President Ilie Bolojan also extended sympathies to the victims' families.
Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine responsibility and assess whether safety regulations were violated. As the country mourns, officials are pledging to ensure justice for the victims and to improve fire safety regulations to prevent future disasters.
