A shooting erupted at a military base in the Belgorod region of Russia on the evening of July 11.
Soldier Opened fire
According to Lenta reports indicate that an altercation among servicemen, fueled by alcohol consumption, escalated into gunfire.
A contracted soldier opened fire on his fellow comrades, resulting in the deaths of three military personnel and several others wounded. Subsequently, the assailant fled the scene, only to later fatally shoot duty officers.
The escaped soldier, identified as Alexey Zhuravlev, had a prior criminal record for robbery and was reportedly preparing to volunteer for a special military operation zone (SVO). According to a friend, Zhuravlev had joined the military on contract in 2023 after working as a PVC construction assembler in Cheboksary. His acquaintance noted that Zhuravlev appeared generally peaceable and stood up for justice, leaving them puzzled over his involvement in the deadly incident at the base in Belgorod.
Emergency Measures Implemented
This incident mirrors previous episodes of military unrest in Russian military units. In November 2023, armed soldiers abandoned their post in the Bryansk region, while in October 2022, another shooting occurred at a military base in Belgorod, resulting in casualties and injuries, though details remained sparse.
Authorities have implemented emergency measures in response to the latest incident, including road closures and heightened security protocols. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the motives behind the shooting and to prevent future tragedies within Russian military installations.
