A sudden explosion at the Nürburgring paddock injured 22 people, including four critically, on Friday evening.

Emergency Services Responded Swiftly

According to Tag24 the incident is believed to have been caused by the explosion of a compressed air cylinder behind a pit box in the paddock area, according to preliminary investigations by the Koblenz police.

The blast resulted in minor injuries such as blast trauma for most of the victims. Emergency services responded swiftly, with four rescue helicopters and several ambulances dispatched to the scene. Additionally, counselors were on-site to provide support.

Despite the incident, the ADAC Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen, a six-hour race and highlight of the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS), is scheduled to proceed as planned on Saturday. The organizers have given teams and drivers the option to participate in the race or not.

Cause of Explosion Unknown

The explosion occurred around 6 PM on Friday at Box 27 in the paddock, which has since been cordoned off along with the surrounding area. The exact cause of the explosion is under investigation by the criminal police, who will continue their inquiries in daylight.

The practice session that took place was part of the preparations for the NLS4 event, featuring various classes competing in the prestigious ADAC Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen. The Nürburgring-Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) is a significant event in the motorsport calendar, drawing participants and spectators from around the world.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the precise cause of the explosion and to ensure the safety of all participants and attendees. The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols and the handling of hazardous materials in the high-stakes environment of motorsport.
