Violent Altercation at Russia's Top Retailer Leaves One Dead

A violent altercation at the Moscow headquarters of Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, resulted in one death and at least two injuries, according to Russian state news agency TASS on Sept. 18.

Videos circulated on Telegram that afternoon showing gunshots and a scuffle at the entrance to the Wildberries office building.

The company's press service claimed the fight started when Vladislav Bakalchuk, the estranged husband of Wildberries' founder, Tatyana Bakalchuk, attempted to "illegally" enter the premises with his security guards.

A representative for Vladislav Bakalchuk said he had been the target of a "large-scale provocation" during what was supposed to be a negotiation regarding warehouse construction for his company, VB Development.

However, Tatyana Bakalchuk told independent media outlet Meduza that her husband, along with co-founder Sergey Anufriev and former board chairman Vladimir Bakin, attempted to seize control of the offices.

She dismissed claims of negotiations, calling it "absurd" and described the incident as a "hostile takeover" that ultimately failed.

Tatyana Bakalchuk had reportedly filed for divorce from Vladislav in July.
