France is reportedly considering the deployment of nuclear-capable fighter jets to Germany as a strategic move to send a “strong message” to Russia.
This proposal comes at a time when the U.S., under President Donald Trump’s administration, appears to be distancing itself from European security matters and Ukraine, raising concerns about the continent’s future defense strategy.
France’s Nuclear Deterrence Strategy
According to The Telegraph, a French official stated that such a deployment "should not be difficult" and would serve as a clear warning to Moscow. The move could also prompt British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to take similar action.
France currently maintains an estimated 300 nuclear warheads under its force de dissuasion (deterrence force) program, which includes both aerial and maritime launch systems.
In contrast, the United Kingdom relies on its Trident nuclear deterrence system, consisting of four Vanguard-class submarines, each capable of carrying up to 16 nuclear warheads.
As reported by HotNews.ro, these discussions took place on the same day that French President Emmanuel Macron met with President Trump at the White House. Their talks focused on continued support for Ukraine and potential peace negotiations.
Strengthening European Defense Independence
During a press conference following his meeting with Trump, Macron emphasized the need for U.S. support in any future peace agreements but also urged Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security.
Before meeting Trump, Macron also held discussions with Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s CDU party and likely future chancellor following the party’s recent election victory.
Merz has called on the UK and France to expand their nuclear protection and has advocated for greater European defense autonomy from the U.S.
“If those who shift their motto from ‘America First’ to ‘America Alone’ prevail, it will be difficult,” Merz stated on Monday, while expressing hope that transatlantic relations could still be preserved.
What’s Next?
If implemented, France’s nuclear fighter jet deployment in Germany would mark a significant shift in Europe’s defense posture.
It signals a growing recognition among European leaders that they may need to rely less on the U.S. and build a more independent security framework in response to global threats.
