In a recent development, France has denied entry to a number of Russian journalists who applied to cover the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

This decision, announced by French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin and reported by Lenta stems from concerns over espionage.

Espionage Concerns Prompt Rejection

Darmanin revealed that less than a hundred media representative applications were rejected due to suspicions of espionage and information sharing with foreign governments. The majority of these rejections were from Russian and Belarusian journalists, along with individuals from other unspecified countries.

"We have refused entry to a significant number of 'journalists' who claimed they were covering the Games," Darmanin stated. He emphasized the application of a precautionary principle in these decisions. "Although they may not be involved in terrorism, the risk of traditional espionage and the potential to access computer networks for cyberattacks remain."

Russian Athletes at the Olympics

Despite the restrictions on journalists, 15 Russian athletes will participate in the 2024 Olympics under a neutral status. This group includes three cyclists, a trampolinist, seven tennis players, three canoe and kayak rowers, and a swimmer.

However, these athletes will face further restrictions. They will not be permitted to participate in the opening ceremony of the Games, with their participation in the closing ceremony still under consideration.
