The German military has ramped up security measures across its bases nationwide.

Enhanced Security

According to Ziare a spokesperson for the Territorial Command confirmed that the Bundeswehr swiftly implemented enhanced security protocols following last week’s events.

These include increased patrols, thorough inspections of perimeter fences, enhanced technical security measures, and the closure of certain areas. Additionally, soldiers have been instructed to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately.

According to reports, one of the incidents occurred on August 14th at a naval base in Wilhelmshaven, where two men were caught scaling the fence. They were quickly apprehended by a sentry and handed over to the police.

While initial concerns suggested a potential security breach, it was later revealed that the men were sailors from a nearby docked vessel who were merely attempting to get a closer look at the German warships.

Possible Water Contamination

Further compounding security concerns, last week the Bundeswehr announced an investigation after a fence was found cut near a water reservoir at the Koln-Wahn Air Base.

Though no evidence of sabotage or water contamination was found, the incident prompted a temporary advisory against using local water in the nearby town of Mechernich until it was lifted after further inspections.

These incidents have heightened fears in Germany of possible Russian sabotage, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Berlin's support for Kyiv. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there has been growing unease about potential threats to German military facilities and critical infrastructure.
