The number of refugees living in Germany has reached a historic high, with 3.48 million people currently seeking refuge in the country, according to a response from the federal government to a query by the Left Party, published by the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.
Among these refugees, 1.18 million are Ukrainians who fled the war.
Refugees now account for four percent of the total German population, marking an increase of 60,000 people since the end of 2023.
The figures include all individuals in Germany under humanitarian grounds, including asylum seekers, recognized refugees, and people with tolerated status.
As reported by Tagesschau, these categories encompass various stages of refugee protection, regardless of their residence permit status.
While the number of refugees is rising, the data also reveals a decline in the number of individuals who are required to leave the country. By mid-2024, there were 226,882 people in this category, a decrease of 15,760 compared to the end of 2023.
Germany has become a primary destination for refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine, with over one million Ukrainians now settled in the country.
